Airborne Wind Energy Systems with Rotary Wing and Ground Generator

Airborne wind energy systems with a rotary wing and a ground generator are analyzed. These systems are very attractive from practical point of view, because of absence of tether drag, simplicity of control, launch and landing of the wing, combined with the well known benefits of AWES, including ability to reach high altitude winds and to adjust altitude dynamically to catch the strongest wind. The article considers a rotary wing with rigid blades. The analysis shows that such blades should get wider and thicker toward its tips. © Leo Goldstein, Airborne Wind Energy Labs
